“Using Drama in the Classroom with Confidence”

a full day CPD Training with Jacqueline Harris PGCE, PGCAEP, MScR

Jacqueline Harris is an educational drama specialist, storyteller, theatre practitioner, writer and creative learning consultant with over twenty years experience of working in over 400 primary schools with both pupils and staff, creating and delivering drama and storytelling projects, providing CPD training and consulting with management teams and teachers to help them embed educational drama strategies and practices across the curriculum. Prior to this she was Head of Drama in three Lancashire schools over a period of twelve years.

Teachers have always known that children who are motivated to learn and have developed their confidence, creative thinking skills and resilience are not only better equipped to navigate the world, but are able to learn much more effectively and also have enhanced academic outcomes.

Educational Drama as a teaching tool is uniquely placed to develop these skills and it can be used both to improve and enhance literacy, and to encourage exciting and unforgettable learning in any area of the curriculum.

Despite this, teachers may feel they don’t have the knowledge or the confidence to make use of this approach. This is only ever due to a lack of effective training, not only in the strategies themselves, but also in how to create, deliver and manage drama sessions in the classroom.

Jacqueline is passionate about supporting teachers by giving them everything they need to use educational drama with confidence.

This is a highly practical, engaging and interactive Continuing Professional Development (CPD) full-day training:

“Using Drama in the Classroom with Confidence - A CPD Training Day”

The day includes:

  • Introduction to Educational Drama: a brief overview of what it is and how it supports effective learning in the classroom.

  • Practical Educational Drama Techniques: Exploring a wide range of techniques practically and outlining their uses. These techniques can be used individually to elevate particular learning outcomes in the classroom, or used as building blocks to create longer ‘Class Dramas’ that can facilitate exciting and deep learning of a particular topic.

  • Drama Games: Drama games can energise, calm, focus, facilitate creative thinking and reflection, and many other things. They are often used indiscriminately as warm-up activities at the beginning of a session, but they can also set the tone for what’s to come, and/or introduce skills that will be needed later in the session.

  • Managing Drama in the Classroom 1: Tricks and Strategies old and new for managing drama sessions effectively.

  • Creating Class Dramas - “The Rising of the Nile”: Using a short class drama to explore how the techniques can be used together to create a meaningful learning experience in any area of the curriculum, and working with the teachers to develop their ideas.

  • Managing Drama in the Classroom 2: How to anticipate potential behaviours when using drama, how to use this knowledge when planning class dramas, along with strategies for how to manage behaviour in longer sessions without breaking the ‘mood’ of the drama.

  • Discussion and Q and A: An opportunity for everyone to reflect on the learning, and to offer help with any questions that arise.

There is is also an accompanying e-resource pack that includes a breakdown of all the different techniques, a selection of drama games with notes on each, two complete Class Dramas - one for Key Stage 1 and one for Key Stage 2, and info sheets on managing drama sessions.

Fee: £ 650 for up to 25 participants (£10 for each extra participant) - This training can be shared with another school or cluster group.

Travel: Charged at 45p per mile return trip from Lancaster, or public transport if this is agreed.

Accommodation is charged when appropriate.
