CPD for Schools

CPD SESSIONS

I have a background and extensive knowledge and expertise as a Drama and Storytelling Specialist in Education (see below).

CPD training days include an initial consultation with the school to make sure that the day will be appropriate to your specific needs, relevant and informed.

“Jacqueline is an inspiration and I wish she could be there to help with all areas of planning on a weekly basis!”

Educational Expertise

Before becoming a full time storyteller and writer in 2000, I was Head of Drama and Theatre Studies in three High Schools in Lancashire over twelve years. The students were fabulous. I loved their vigour, candour, authenticity and the babble of life they brought into the drama studio.

I then worked for Creative Partnerships for six years, developing and delivering storytelling projects in over one hundred schools. At the same time I ran two three-year-programmes and shorter programmes in schools as a Creative Learning Consultant, working alongside senior management and staff to develop and manage projects that led to the embedding of Creative Learning Strategies that were shown to raise both engagement and attainment across the curriculum. This was supported with bespoke CPD sessions.

I also have a Post graduate Certificate in Advanced Educational Practice: Creative Practice, Arts and Culture (as well as a PGCE). I’m currently engaged in a Masters Research programme at The University of Edinburgh looking into how and why we tell stories.

CPD Full Training Day:

Using Drama to Stimulate Literacy in the Classroom

Objectives:

  • To become familiar with a variety of Drama techniques that can be applied directly to the classroom
  • To look at ways in which these techniques can be used to create structures that can give context and meaning to learning across the curriculum.
  • To discover the ways in which these techniques can incorporate a wide variety of writing tasks in a way that makes them easy and accessible to pupils, particularly those who find literacy difficult.

This course will explore a wide variety of drama techniques along with strategies for managing drama in the classroom.  We will then look at how these techniques can be used to build Drama Story Structures that will create a learning environment that supports  speaking, listening and many forms of writing. This way of working can be applied to different areas of the curriculum. It provides a context for learning that can encourage and motivate pupils. This course includes a resource pack explaining the different drama techniques.

“Loved Jackie’s practical workshop. I totally engrossed myself and got lost in the Rising of the Nile. Lots of practical ideas and the teaching manual is excellent.”

CPD Full Training Day:

Storytelling for Literacy

Objectives:

  • To develop techniques for using stories orally in the classroom.
  • To develop techniques to encourage children to tell and develop their own oral stories, both collaboratively and individually.
  • To look at ways in which this work can be developed and lead into successful creative writing.

This one day course will provide a solid grounding in how to use storytelling techniques to develop children’s literacy skills. We will look at ideas and strategies for supporting children to create and tell their own stories. In the morning we will focus on ways to develop and tell oral stories. In the afternoon we will concentrate on how to encourage children to use these skills as a basis for developing written pieces and explore techniques to help them gain the confidence and motivation to put pen to paper. Included in the workshop fee will be a booklet outlining the techniques used and a list of available resources.
Suitable for teachers at Key Stage 2 and Key Stage3

“The teachers’ INSET as you could tell, was a hugely enjoyable day. Teachers commented: “I had a wonderful time… I feel more confident… I  realise the value of personalising the story for different audiences…thoroughly enjoyable…very motivating.” David Smith, Mid-Pennine Arts
